An orphaned page is a page that exists on the domain but receives no inbound links from any other page on the same domain. It may have excellent content, accurate schema, and strong entity clarity. None of that matters if no other page on the site points to it — because an AI system that crawls by following links will never reach it, and even a sitemap-directed crawl will treat it as isolated from the authority network.
Why Orphans Fail in AI Retrieval
AI retrieval systems use the link graph to build topical clusters and authority hierarchies. A page with no inbound links belongs to no cluster and has no authority signal; it is a standalone node in the graph. When an AI retrieval system scores content for a query, cluster membership and hub proximity are weighted factors. An orphaned page, even if highly relevant, scores poorly on these structural signals.
Common Sources of Orphaned Pages
Orphaned pages typically emerge from: content migration (pages moved or redirected without updating internal links), automated content generation (programmatically created pages not added to any navigation or hub page), historical blog posts not linked from any category page or hub article, and landing pages created for paid campaigns that were never integrated into the site's content architecture.

Fixing Orphans: Link or Retire
