Hub Pages and Topical Authority in AI Retrieval

A hub page is the canonical authority page for a topic cluster. Its position in the link graph determines whether the cluster registers as an authoritative knowledge area for AI systems.

Every topic cluster on a well-structured website has a hub page: the authoritative central page that defines the topic, is linked to by all supporting pages in the cluster, and is the most likely target for AI-generated references to that topic. Hub pages are not created by declaration — they emerge from the link graph. The page that receives the most inbound links from semantically related pages becomes the hub, regardless of what the site's content strategy intended.

What Makes a Page a Hub

Hub status in the SiteNexis model is determined by three factors: internal PageRank within the topical cluster (not site-wide), the semantic coherence between the hub candidate and its inbound linkers (the pages that link to it should be topically related), and the entity coverage of the page (a hub page should explicitly define and describe the primary entity of the cluster). A page with high site-wide PageRank that is not semantically related to its inbound linkers is not a hub — it is just a popular page.

Why AI Systems Treat Hub Pages Differently

When an AI retrieval system identifies a topical cluster on a domain, it looks for the hub page as the canonical authority on that topic. Chunks from the hub page receive a cluster authority boost in retrieval ranking. Citations to this domain on that topic are more likely to reference the hub page URL. The hub page's entity definitions and schema markup become the primary entity representation for the entire cluster.

Unintentional Hubs
