Internal Linking for AI Systems: A Different Strategy Than Traditional SEO

Traditional internal linking is about PageRank flow. For AI systems, it is about semantic connection modelling. The strategies overlap but are not identical.

The traditional SEO case for internal linking is about PageRank flow: links from high-authority pages to lower-authority pages transfer authority and help those pages rank. This remains relevant but is increasingly secondary to a different function that AI retrieval systems assign to internal links: semantic relationship signalling. When an AI system processes an internal link, it is not primarily interested in authority transfer, it is building a semantic graph that models the relationships between the topics, entities, and claims on your domain. The anchor text of that link is the label on the relationship edge.

Anchor Text as Semantic Labels

In AI retrieval graph models, internal links are typed relationships between content nodes. A link from a page about "AI retrieval" to a page about "entity disambiguation" with anchor text "entity disambiguation techniques" creates a typed edge in the semantic graph: the AI-retrieval node is connected to the entity-disambiguation node through a relationship labelled "entity disambiguation techniques". This label helps AI systems understand that the two topics are related and that the relationship is specifically about disambiguation techniques. Generic anchor text ("read more", "learn here", "this article") creates an untyped edge — a connection without a semantic label — which contributes nothing to the relationship model.

Hub Entity Linking

Every content page should link to the primary entity definition page that anchors your domain's topical authority. This is typically your homepage, your About page, or your primary product or service page, wherever your Organisation schema is defined and where your entity is most fully described. Every link back to this hub entity page, with anchor text containing the entity's canonical name, reinforces the entity attribution for all content on the domain. AI systems use these links to build confidence that the domain's content cluster is anchored to a specific, identifiable entity, which is a prerequisite for high citation probability.

Conduct an anchor text audit of your internal links. Replace every instance of "click here", "read more", "here", "this post", and "this article" with descriptive anchor text that names the destination page's topic and primary entity. This single change improves semantic graph quality across your entire domain with no content creation required.

Bidirectional Linking for Cluster Reinforcement

  • Link between pages that address complementary subtopics of the same primary topic — not just from hub to spoke
  • When a page is cited in another page's content, link back — bidirectional relationships have higher semantic confidence than one-directional ones
  • Use the same anchor text in both directions where the relationship is symmetric (e.g., "entity disambiguation" and "AI visibility scoring" are related; link between them in both directions)
  • Avoid long chains (A → B → C → D) where the relationship could be expressed directly; add a direct link from A to D if it is semantically relevant
  • Review your link structure every six months as new content is added — new pages often have semantic relationships with existing pages that are not linked

The Contextual Link Premium

A link embedded within a paragraph that discusses the linked topic is semantically stronger than a link in a "related articles" sidebar or a footer. The surrounding text provides context that helps AI systems interpret the relationship. A link to a page about "entity disambiguation" embedded in a sentence about "how AI systems model brand identity" carries the semantic context of the surrounding paragraph, which enriches the relationship model. Prioritise contextual links — links embedded in body text — over navigational links in sidebars, footers, or recommendation widgets.
