SEO Is Not Dead. The Scope of What It Covers Has Expanded Significantly
Each major Google update produces a wave of "SEO is dead" claims. Each wave has been wrong in the same structural way: it mistakes a change in tactics for the end of the discipline. The AEO/GEO update follows this pattern — but the scope expansion this time is larger than any previous one.
This article examines a recurring analytical error: the conflation of "the tactics required to achieve X have changed" with "X no longer matters." Applied to SEO and the AEO/GEO update, the error produces the claim that traditional search optimisation is obsolete. The claim is false in an instructive way — understanding precisely why it is false is more useful than simply asserting that it is.
Why "SEO Is Dead" Is Always the Wrong Diagnosis
Every major shift in how Google processes and ranks content — Panda (2011), Penguin (2012), Hummingbird (2013), mobile-first indexing (2018), BERT (2019), Core Web Vitals (2021), AI Overviews (2024) — generated a version of the "SEO is dead" narrative. In each case, what actually changed was the set of content properties that most reliably produced high visibility. The discipline of systematically improving those properties did not change. What changed was the target. SEO is not a fixed set of tactics. It is the practice of understanding and improving the properties of web content that search systems reward. As those systems evolve, the practice evolves. The practice does not end.
What the Technical Foundation Still Determines
The foundational practices of technical SEO remain prerequisites for AI visibility, not competitors to it. Crawlability determines whether AI crawler agents can access content at all. A page blocked by robots.txt or failing consistently during crawl is not retrievable by AI systems, there is no AI visibility for inaccessible content. Canonical management determines which version of duplicate or near-duplicate content enters the retrieval pool. Page speed and rendering correctness determine whether AI extraction systems see complete content or a partial rendering. Internal link structure determines which pages accumulate enough authority signal to appear in retrieval candidate pools for competitive queries. None of these properties are less important in an AI search context. In many cases they are more important, because AI retrieval systems process far more pages and make faster inclusion decisions than manual ranking systems did.
What the Technical Foundation Can No Longer Achieve Alone
The scope change in AEO/GEO is not that technical SEO is less valuable, it is that technical SEO is no longer sufficient to achieve the highest tiers of AI visibility. A technically perfect page with no entity clarity, no machine trust signals, and no factual density will not be cited in AI-generated responses regardless of its organic ranking performance. This is because organic ranking and AI citation are determined by overlapping but non-identical signal sets. Organic ranking is primarily determined by link authority and relevance signals that have been tuned over decades. AI citation eligibility is additionally determined by entity confidence, trust signal consistency, and citation structural readiness, properties that traditional SEO practice has rarely prioritised because traditional ranking did not require them.

If high-ranking pages are consistently absent from AI-generated responses on relevant topics, the gap is an AI visibility gap — not an SEO failure. The SEO infrastructure is working. The Scope Expansion Is the Right Frame
The accurate characterisation of what AEO and GEO represent is scope expansion, not replacement. The discipline has grown to encompass entity intelligence, machine trust signals, retrieval simulation, and recommendation surface coverage — layers that did not exist in traditional SEO practice because the systems they address did not exist. Practitioners who frame this as "SEO is dead, GEO is the future" will miss the dependency: GEO built on a broken SEO foundation will not produce AI visibility, because the infrastructure layer is still required. The correct frame is: everything SEO required is still required, and four additional capability layers are now also required. That is a larger job. It is not a different job.
